Best Motorcycle Cover for Harley-Davidson: Heat, Waterproof Ratings and Sizing

Two of the five articles ranking for the best motorcycle cover for Harley Davidson were published in 2020. One is British. One recommends a brand that does not sell on Amazon. Only Harley's own page is written for a Harley at all, and it is selling you Harley covers.

Meanwhile the Reddit thread on page one has ninety comments and the Facebook thread is riders arguing about what actually works on a Road Glide Limited. That is the useful material, so this guide is built the same way: every owner review on 22 products, read page by page.

Four things decide whether a Harley Davidson motorcycle cover is worth buying, and only one of them is on the front of the box:

  • Almost none of them have a heat shield. Three of the 22 do. One seller warns in its own bullet points that hot pipes "will burn the Oxford Fabric cover off".
  • The cheap covers publish waterproof numbers and the expensive ones do not. A $65 cover states 10000MM. A $125 cover's own Amazon spec field says Water Resistant, not waterproof.
  • Flapping damages paint, not the lining. The fix is a third belly strap, not a softer liner.
  • Covers get stolen. One five-star review reads, in full: "Best trike cover until some one stole it."

Below: how long to let a Harley cool, what the waterproof numbers mean, how to size a cover for a bike with a tour pack, the difference between an indoor and an outdoor cover, and 22 products grouped by what they are for.

FENRIR 104 in Motorcycle Cover, 10000MM Waterproof with Heat Layer
#1 Pick: Best Motorcycle Cover for Harley-Davidson

The only cover here that publishes both a waterproof figure and a heat figure: 10000MM hydrostatic head and a layer rated to 1054F at the pipe. Three windproof buckles, an antenna hole cut in, and a Harley model list on the listing. Waterproofing fades over a hard winter, so re-treat it in year two.

Heat: how long to let a Harley cool before you cover it

This is the failure that costs you the cover and sometimes the paint, and it is the thing the listings are least honest about.

Of the 22 products researched, three claim a real heat panel. Dowco uses heavy cotton shields. Nelson-Rigg calls them integrated heat-resistant panels. Badass Moto uses a metallic shield. Everything else on Amazon has nothing between a hot exhaust and a sheet of coated polyester.

One seller says it out loud

KEMIMOTO puts the warning in its own sales bullets, which is unusual and worth quoting exactly: "Do not immediately use it after a driving when the engine is pretty hot, and it will burn the Oxford Fabric cover off."

Read that again. The manufacturer is telling you its own product melts.

The actual cooling time

Dowco is the only brand in this entire set that publishes a number, and it is ten minutes. Ten minutes of pipes cooling before you fit the cover. That is far shorter than the half hour or hour that gets repeated on forums, and it comes from the company that fits cotton heat shields in the first place.

For a cover with no heat panel, be more generous. The pipes on a Harley are down the right side at the exact height a cover hem sits, and a Milwaukee-Eight puts out real heat after a ride in traffic. Fifteen to twenty minutes is a sensible working figure. Put your hand near the header, not on it.

The strongest thermal number on Amazon

One brand publishes an actual temperature rather than a marketing phrase. FENRIR states a high temperature resistant layer rated to 1054F / 550C. It never uses the words "heat shield", which is why it does not appear in the three above, but that figure is the most specific thermal claim in the category.

If your bike has no factory heat shield

A clamp-on aluminium exhaust shield costs about twelve dollars and stands the fabric roughly an inch off the pipe. It is sold for protecting soft luggage, and it does the same job for a cover. Cheaper than replacing a melted cover, and much cheaper than a scorch mark on a header.

The half cover answer

There is a category of cover that sidesteps the problem entirely: the half cover, which drapes the front of the bike and never reaches the exhaust. An owner in Phoenix: "got this to cover my HD FLHTK in Phoenix, AZ when I go to the gym at 2:00 pm when it is 100 degrees + no shade. It keeps my seat and handlebars cooler." Another puts the appeal plainly: "You have to wait till Buy cooled off before you put it on not now this one is awesome."

Waterproof ratings on a Harley Davidson motorcycle cover: what the numbers mean

Every motorcycle cover waterproof outdoor listing says waterproof. Only some of them tell you how waterproof, and there is a pattern in who does.

The measurement

Hydrostatic head is how tall a column of water the fabric holds back before it leaks. It is quoted in millimetres or in pascals, and the two convert directly: 1000 mm is roughly 10,000 Pa. Anything above about 1500 mm is genuinely rainproof for a stationary object; higher numbers buy you margin against wind driving the water into the fabric.

What to make of that

Do not read it as the cheap covers being better. Read it as two different sales strategies. The budget brands compete on a number because it is the only thing that separates them on a search results page. The established brands compete on construction, warranty and the fact that people have heard of them.

But two of those entries deserve a second look. Platinum Shield sells at $124.95 with "weatherproof" in the marketing while its own Amazon specification field reads Water Resistant, which is not the same thing. And Dowco, the most expensive cover here, publishes no figure at all, which for a $138 professional-grade product is a curious omission.

Do the ratings hold up?

Broadly yes, with a shelf life. The best evidence comes from a French owner of the 10000MM cover after a hard winter: "nous sommes en plein hiver et il pleut depuis plusieurs semaines avec du vent qui a depasse les 100 km/h, et depuis 15 jours l'etancheite de la bache n'est plus parfaite" - weeks of rain and 100 km/h wind, and after a fortnight the cover was no longer perfectly watertight, notably over the seat.

Another owner of the same cover: "Seems to leave moisture under it sometimes, but has kept most of the winter rain off and survived all the winter storms."

And on the Dowco: "Mine was pretty much waterproof through some very, very heavy rain storms that came with some serious wind gusts." Note the hedge in a five-star review. Pretty much.

Where the water actually gets in

  • Over the seat and the top, where the fabric is flat and water pools rather than running off. This is the area both critical reviews name.
  • Through the seams, once the heat-sealed tape starts peeling. One owner reports the tape lifting after two years.
  • Up from underneath, which no rating addresses. A cover keeps rain off the top of the bike. It does not stop spray and damp rising from a wet driveway.

One practical note from an owner who re-treated his: "I had to waterproof the cover and haven't any leaks yet." A can of spray-on fabric waterproofer at the start of the second season is worth more than twenty dollars of extra spend at purchase.

Sizing: measure the bike, not the model name

Sizing is where most of the one and two star reviews in this category come from, and the rule that solves it is simple: measure your bike from the front tyre to the furthest thing at the back, and buy a cover longer than that number.

On a Harley Touring bike the furthest thing at the back is usually not the bike. It is the tour pack, or the luggage rack behind the tour pack.

The lengths that matter

Your bikeCover length
Sportster, Street, Softail without extras96 in
Softail or Dyna with a windshield and bags104 in
Touring: Street Glide, Road Glide, Road King108 in
Touring with a tour pack110 in and a widened rear cut
Ultra Limited, full dresser with a rack116 in
Tri Glide, Freewheeler, trikeTrike-specific cut, not a longer cover

Sizing a Harley touring motorcycle cover

A Harley touring motorcycle cover is the case where the model name helps you least, because two Street Glides can be twelve inches apart in overall length depending on what is bolted to the back. Measure yours. If there is a tour pack, you are at 110 inches and you want a cut that names a top box. If there is a rack behind the tour pack, you are at 116.

Size up, not down

This is the consistent advice from owners of the premium covers, whose own size charts run tight. A Dowco buyer: "Got the next size up as recommended by someone else, and it's right on." Another: "Even though the Dowco website recommends a Large for my bike, I found it too tight to go over a tall windshield and BMW 49L tail case."

What too small looks like in practice: "One problem with such a tight fit is that it pulls my mirrors down so I have to readjust them every time I ride. The second problem is that the bottom barely reaches to the floorboards."

But do not go wildly oversize either

A cover much bigger than the bike becomes a sail. An Electra Glide owner with a tour pack: "The fit is loose and very oversize, I'd prefer tighter to avoid whipping in wind." A too-large cover flaps, and flapping is what damages paint. One size up. Not three.

The tour pack trap

Several covers are sold in a "Side Box" cut and a "Side+Top Box" cut, and the difference is real. A five-star reviewer of a 600D cover warns anyway: "If you have a tour pack this cover most likely will not fit." Buy the cut that names a top box, not just the longest length.

And the reverse: if you do not have a tour pack, the Touring-cut covers are baggy at the back. "They have a bunch of webbing on the rear to take up the slack for no trunk. Looks ugly."

Watch for coarse size steps

Some brands jump twenty inches between sizes. An owner: "It's too big for my bike, and the smaller one is too small. There's 20in between sizes, wish they made 96in like other brands." Check the published inch figures before you check the size letter, because S, M, L and XL mean different things at every brand.

Indoor, outdoor or indoor/outdoor Harley Davidson motorcycle cover: the real difference

Searches for a Harley Davidson indoor outdoor motorcycle cover have grown more than eighteen-fold in a year, and searches for a Harley Davidson indoor motorcycle cover have more than tripled. It is the fastest moving question in this category, and it is worth answering properly rather than with marketing labels.

The difference is coating, not thickness

A Harley Davidson indoor motorcycle cover is a soft breathable fabric with no waterproof coating. Its job is dust, garage grit, cat paw prints and light UV through a window. Because it breathes freely it will never trap condensation against the paint.

An outdoor cover is the same idea plus a polyurethane coating and taped seams. The coating is what stops rain, and it is also what stops the fabric breathing, which is why every serious outdoor cover has vents cut into it.

A Harley Davidson indoor outdoor motorcycle cover usually means an outdoor cover the manufacturer is comfortable selling as both. It is not a third fabric, and that is worth knowing before you pay extra for the label.

The honest test is what the listings say about themselves

A dedicated indoor stretch cover states it in capitals: "The stretch fabric is NOT WATERPROOF due to its flexibility and elasticity. Don't use it on outdoor rainy days." That is a listing telling the truth.

Meanwhile two budget covers marketed as outdoor are recommended as indoor covers by their own owners. One titles his review "Great for indoor storage, not for long term outdoor use." Another: "It is thin but work for inside storage."

So the practical hierarchy is not three tiers. It is: a proper indoor cover, a proper outdoor cover, and a cheap outdoor cover that is really an indoor cover with a coating on it.

Which one do you need?

  • Garage, no weather: a stretch indoor cover. It goes on in seconds, shows the bike's lines, breathes completely, and costs about $40. An owner of a 2025 Street Glide: "Fits like a glove. Perfect for keeping the dust off in the garage between rides."
  • Carport, shed, under a tree: an outdoor cover with vents. You want the coating for the odd blown-in rain, and the vents so the damp air can leave.
  • Fully outdoors, all year: a premium outdoor cover, sized up, with three tie-down points and a lock through the grommets. And accept that you are replacing it every two to four years.
  • Parked at work in the sun for eight hours: a half cover. No cooling wait, packs into a saddlebag.

One caveat on indoor covers: no lock provision at all, and the fabric is thin. It is a dust cover, not security, and you still let the pipes cool. "you have to wait for the bike to cool down so that nothing gets scorched."

Wind: what actually holds a cover on a Harley

A cover that blows off at 3am is a cover that spends the night scraping across your paint, or lands in the road. Four things are meant to stop it, and they are not equally effective.

Ranked by what owners report

  1. Belly straps, and the number is three. One strap is not enough on a bagger. The covers with three buckles get the "did not move in a storm" reviews. A cover with one centre strap gets this instead: "it only has one strap that is in the middle and the 'Full bottom elastic hem' is a lie."
  2. A full elastic hem that pulls the cover under the bike front and rear. Note that this is the claim most often exaggerated, so read the reviews and not the bullet.
  3. Front and rear drawstrings that cinch the cover in around the wheels.
  4. A cable through the lock grommets and around the front wheel. Its main job is theft, but it is also the single most reliable thing keeping the cover on the bike.

What works, in owners' words

A FENRIR owner on an Electra Glide Classic: "Absolutely 100% better has 3 hooks and pull string. I put it on before a pretty decent storm and it stayed on in the heavy wind and rain worked awesome."

A Road King Classic owner: "The straps that help keep the cover 'tighter' haven't budged or shown wear after three incredible windstorms."

And a Badass Moto owner who had to add his own: "I did bungee it down over the back and front wheel as heavy wind would whip it." Even a good cover on a big bike sometimes needs more.

The fix for a cover with one strap

You do not have to buy a new cover. A set of clip-and-bungee gust straps costs about $20 and gives you three extra tie-down points anywhere on the fabric, no grommet needed. They are sold for car covers and the principle transfers directly. One owner: "The clips would come off during high wind and the cover would blow off. These have solved the problem. Having three sets especially in high wind is a game changer."

Two cautions if you fit them to a bike: the toothed clips bite the fabric, so they will eventually mark a thin cover, and nothing on the packaging tells you to keep the bungee away from a hot exhaust.

Will a cover scratch the paint?

Yes, but almost never for the reason people expect. The lining is rarely the culprit. Movement is.

Flapping is the mechanism

A cover that lifts and slaps in the wind is dragging fabric across clearcoat thousands of times a night, and whatever grit blew under it is doing the actual cutting. An owner who solved it says so directly: "I like the two straps front and back and the extra strap that I put around the center of the bike. Keeps the flapping down which has really hurt the paint in the past."

That is the whole answer. A tight cover with three straps is gentler on paint than a soft-lined cover that moves.

The windshield is the first thing to fail

Not the paint, the screen, and not from scratching but from the cover tearing over it. A Texas owner after a year in the sun: "It has begun to get tears in the fabric where it fits over the plexiglass windscreen." The screen edge is the sharpest high point on the bike and it works through fabric from the inside.

This is what the soft windshield liner panel on the premium covers is for, and it is a real differentiator. Dowco and Nelson-Rigg both fit one. A KEMIMOTO owner names its absence as the reason for four stars rather than five: "This cover lacks the soft liner that protects the windshield."

Practical rules

  • Never cover a dirty bike. Grit under a cover is sandpaper.
  • Shake the cover out before fitting it, and store it in its bag rather than on the garage floor.
  • Get the flap out of it. Three tie-down points, not one.
  • Check the windshield area at the end of each season for the fabric starting to thin.

Condensation, mildew and rust under the cover

A perfectly waterproof cover has one problem: it is also perfectly airtight. Warm damp air under the cover meets cold metal at night, condenses on it, and cannot leave. The result over a winter is surface rust on the pipes and mildew on the seat.

Vents are the reason this mostly does not happen

Almost every decent outdoor cover here has them. Dowco calls it a Moisture-Guard vent system, Nelson-Rigg calls it Perma-venting, the budget brands just call them side vents. They all do the same thing: let the damp air out at the top so drier air can come in at the hem.

Owners still report it occasionally: "Seems to leave moisture under it sometimes." That is one honest line in an otherwise positive review, and it is the realistic expectation.

Three things that make it worse

  • Covering a wet bike. You have just sealed several litres of water in with the paint. Let it dry, or at least wipe it down.
  • Covering it on wet ground. Damp rises from concrete and asphalt all night. A sheet of plastic or a piece of board under the bike does more than an extra $50 on the cover.
  • A cover with no vents. Some of the cheapest ones do not list any.

The cheap fix for long storage

If the bike is going under a cover for a whole winter, put rechargeable silica gel bags on the floor either side of the front wheel. Each 500 g bag pulls about 150 g of water out of the air and recharges in a microwave. It is the same trick people use in gun safes and boat cabins, and at under $40 for four bags it is cheaper than one rusted set of pipes.

Does a cover help or hurt security?

Both, and the evidence is unusually direct.

A cover hides the bike

An opportunist walking past a covered bike does not know whether it is a $30,000 CVO or a scooter. That is real, and it is the main security argument for a plain cover with no brand logos on it.

A cover also gets stolen

A five-star review of a good 600D cover, in its entirety: "Best trike cover until some one stole it." A $60 cover left loose on a bike is a $60 item lying in the street.

The lock grommets are the answer, and most covers get them wrong

Nearly every cover here lists a "lock hole". Look at what that actually means:

  • One ABS hole at the front only on most of the mid-price covers. You can thread a cable through it and around the front wheel, which is better than nothing.
  • Two aluminium lock holes on a couple of the budget covers.
  • Reinforced holes at both front AND rear on exactly one cover in this set, which is the only arrangement that lets you run a cable through two points.
  • None at all on the indoor covers and the half cover.

And the grommet is only as good as the fabric around it. A one-star review: "I used this cover for the first time and the lock loop tore out of it as I was putting it on the motorcycle."

What to actually do

A 7 ft vinyl-coated braided steel cable with a padlock costs about $11 and is sized to pass through cover grommets. Run it through the front grommet, around the front wheel or a frame member, and lock it. It stops the cover walking off in wind and it stops someone walking off with it.

Be clear about what it is, though. One owner: "Little deterant but better than nothing." A warded padlock protects the cover. It does not protect the motorcycle. That is a disc lock and a chain, and it is a different purchase.

Is it bad to leave a motorcycle outside with a cover?

It is far better than leaving it outside uncovered, and worse than a garage. The honest version has three parts.

What the cover genuinely prevents

UV is the big one. Sun destroys seats, fades paint, chalks plastic and cracks rubber, and it does it faster than rain does anything. A cover also stops bird droppings, which etch clearcoat within hours, tree sap, and the fine grit that gets ground into paint every time you wipe the bike down.

What it does not prevent

  • Moisture from below. The ground is wet, the cover is not a floor.
  • Condensation, unless it is vented and unless you covered a dry bike.
  • Battery discharge. Nothing to do with the cover, but a bike stored outside all winter needs a maintainer on it.
  • Theft. See above.

The wear that happens anyway

Owners are candid about the service life of an outdoor cover in real sun. A Badass Moto owner: "I bought this in 2019 and it has finally died, but been out covering my bikes from the day I bought it." Roughly four seasons of continuous outdoor use from a $109 cover, which is a reasonable result. A $30 cover: "Good but lasts only 2 years." And a southern owner who re-buys: "I have had several of these covers, because the southern sun is hard on things."

So, the rules for outdoor storage

  • Cover a clean, dry, cooled bike.
  • Put something under the bike if the ground is damp.
  • Use a vented cover and three tie-down points.
  • Cable-lock the cover to the bike.
  • Battery maintainer on for anything longer than a couple of weeks.
  • Take the cover off on a dry sunny day now and then and let everything air.
  • Budget to replace the cover every two to four years. It is a consumable.

Mistakes that ruin a cover, or the bike under it

  • Covering hot pipes. The most expensive mistake in the category. Ten minutes minimum with a heat panel, fifteen to twenty without one.
  • Covering a wet bike. You have sealed the water in.
  • Covering a dirty bike. Grit plus movement equals scratches.
  • Buying by model name instead of measuring. Measure to the back of the tour pack and add a few inches.
  • Accepting one belly strap. Three tie-down points, or add gust straps for $20.
  • Buying an oversize cover thinking bigger is safer. Loose fabric flaps and flapping is what hurts paint.
  • Buying the "Side Box" cut when you have a top box. Read the cut, not just the length.
  • Trusting the word waterproof over the spec field. One $125 cover's own Amazon field says Water Resistant.
  • Leaving the cover loose overnight. Eleven dollars of cable stops it becoming someone else's cover.
  • Expecting a cover to last forever. Two to four years outdoors is the real number.

The 22 best motorcycle covers for Harley-Davidson

Grouped by what they are for rather than ranked one to twenty-two, because a $138 all-weather cover and a $12 exhaust shield are not competing with each other. Every price, rating and review quoted was checked on the product page.

One note on scope. There is no Harley-Davidson OEM cover on Amazon and no Tour Master cover either, so the premium tier here is Dowco, Nelson-Rigg, Badass Moto, Platinum Shield and FENRIR. If you specifically want the Harley-branded cover, that is a dealer purchase.

Premium all-weather: the heavy duty outdoor motorcycle cover tier

Heat panels, windshield liners, vent systems, real warranties. This is where the Dowco motorcycle cover and the Nelson-Rigg sit, roughly $65 to $140. If the bike lives outdoors all year, the extra money buys construction and a lining that protects the screen, which is where cheap covers tear first.

Sizes: Minimoto 67 in, Naked/Sport 88.5 in, Cruiser 96.5 in, 104 in, Touring 108 in, plus Trike and Adventure top box cuts. Listing names Street Glide, Road King, Road Glide, Electra Glide and Road King Classic.

The only cover in this guide that publishes both a real waterproof figure and a real temperature figure, and it costs $65.

The waterproof number is 10000MM hydrostatic head, which the listing helpfully compares to an ordinary umbrella at 500MM. The thermal number is the more unusual one: a separate high temperature resistant layer rated to 1054F / 550C at the pipe. FENRIR never uses the phrase "heat shield", which is why it does not show up in heat shield searches, but that is the most specific thermal claim on Amazon in this category.

Three windproof buckles plus drawstrings front and rear, which matches what owners say actually keeps a cover on a bagger. An Electra Glide Classic owner: "Absolutely 100% better has 3 hooks and pull string. I put it on before a pretty decent storm and it stayed on in the heavy wind and rain worked awesome."

An antenna hole is cut in, which matters on a Harley and is missing from several pricier covers. And there are dedicated Trike and Adventure sizes on the same listing.

Two honest limits. The waterproofing is not permanent: a French owner through a hard winter with 100 km/h winds reported that after a fortnight the cover was no longer perfectly watertight, particularly over the seat. And a long-term owner says the inner lining has been cheapened and the seam tape peeled after two years.

Also note the sizing is metric on one option, listed only as 265x110x130cm, which is easy to misread against inch-based bike lengths.

What owners say: “Replaced my old cover with this one for my 01 Electraglide Classic. Absolutely 100% better has 3 hooks and pull string. It stayed on in the heavy wind and rain worked awesome. - Bubba73”

Dowco WeatherAll Plus Motorcycle Cover, Professional Grade 50004-02
2

Dowco WeatherAll Plus Motorcycle Cover, Professional Grade 50004-02

4.6(792 ratings)

ClimaShield Plus 300D solution-dyed polyester, PU undercoating, taped seams. Cotton heat shields, Moisture-Guard vents, cotton windshield liner, compression bag, limited lifetime warranty.

Universal full-size fit, sold as separate ASINs by size. Owners consistently advise ordering one size up, especially with a tall windshield or a top case.

The reference product in the category, and the one every other guide names. It is also the only brand that publishes a cooling time, which is the single most useful number in this whole article: ten minutes of pipes cooling before you fit it.

What the money buys is the construction detail. Cotton heat shields sewn in over the pipe area. A Reflective Moisture-Guard vent system that doubles as night visibility. A soft cotton liner panel over the windshield, which is where cheap covers tear through first. A sewn-in wheel lock pass-through and a pocket for an alarm. Limited lifetime warranty.

Owners on the weather: "Mine was pretty much waterproof through some very, very heavy rain storms that came with some serious wind gusts." And: "Every time I take off my cover, I see no water infiltration."

Three things to weigh against it. Dowco publishes no hydrostatic figure at all, which for a $138 professional-grade cover is a curious omission when $50 covers state theirs. The size chart runs tight - a Softail owner: "Got the next size up as recommended by someone else, and it's right on", and another: "Even though the Dowco website recommends a Large for my bike, I found it too tight to go over a tall windshield and BMW 49L tail case." Too tight is not cosmetic: "it pulls my mirrors down so I have to readjust them every time I ride."

And the belly strap is a weak point on some units: "one side of the strap immediately pulled off from one side of the cover, rendering the strap useless."

Even a happy owner notes the fabric has thinned over the years: "The material isn't as thick as covers in the past, and that's too bad."

Buy it for the heat shields, the windshield liner and the warranty. Order one size larger than the chart says.

What owners say: “Mine was pretty much waterproof through some very, very heavy rain storms that came with some serious wind gusts. - Joe Cool”

  • Heat shields and a windshield liner, both rare
  • Vent system that owners confirm works
  • Limited lifetime warranty
Cons
  • No published hydrostatic rating
  • Size chart runs tight - order one size up
  • Belly strap tore off on first use for one owner

Badass Moto Heavy-Duty Motorcycle Cover for XL Touring and Baggers, 108 in
3

Badass Moto Heavy-Duty Motorcycle Cover for XL Touring and Baggers, 108 in

4.7(4,738 ratings)

Nine sizes from Scooter to HD Trike, each with published length, width and height. XL is 108 in long and 60 to 65 in tall. Metallic exhaust shields, moisture vents, reflective strips.

XL is 108 in L x 65 in tall, for Harley Ultra Limited, CVO, Road King, Gold Wing and Indian Chieftain. Also Scooter, S, M, L, Ryker, Spyder RT and HD Trike sizes on the same listing.

The best-reviewed premium cover here at 4,738 ratings, and the one with the most useful size chart: nine sizes, each with a published length, width AND height, so you can actually check whether it clears a tall windshield rather than guessing from a length alone.

It is also one of only three covers in this guide with real exhaust shields inside. An owner confirms them: "This is an excellent motorcycle cover. Feels well made and even has heat shields on the inside for the exhaust."

A 2025 Street Glide Ultra owner: "Bought the XL for my 2025 HD Street Glide Ultra. Like the one for my wife's Ryker Rally, the XL fits my Harley perfectly." Another on a fully loaded Vulcan: "covers the entire bike with bags and windshield got a size xl and it fits perfectly."

The durability report worth quoting is from a five-star owner being honest about the end: "I bought this in 2019 and it has finally died, but been out covering my bikes from the day I bought it." Four seasons of continuous outdoor use from a $109 cover is a fair result, and it is the realistic number for this whole category.

The same owner also flags the wind limitation on the biggest bikes: "I did bungee it down over the back and front wheel as heavy wind would whip it." A single belly strap plus elastic hem is not always enough on a full dresser.

Two other cautions. Colour delivered has not always matched the listing - a two-star buyer received white with a black top instead of silver top black. And the XL bullets do not state a denier rating, so you cannot compare the fabric weight against the 420D and 600D budget covers below.

What owners say: “This is an excellent motorcycle cover. Feels well made and even has heat shields on the inside for the exhaust. - kszook”

Features
  • Nine sizes with published length, width AND height for each
  • Metallic exhaust shields inside the cover
  • Windshield liner panel plus moisture release vents
  • Night reflective strips at handlebar height on both sides

Pros
  • Best-reviewed premium cover here at 4,738 ratings
  • The only size chart that publishes height as well as length
  • Genuine heat shields plus a windshield liner
  • Documented four seasons of continuous outdoor use
Cons
  • Colour delivered did not match the listing for one buyer
  • Wind still lifts it on a full dresser without extra bungees
  • Coarse size steps mean some buyers order twice
  • No denier rating published
  • Storage bag not stated for this size

Nelson-Rigg Defender Extreme Motorcycle Cover, Waterproof All Weather
4

Nelson-Rigg Defender Extreme Motorcycle Cover, Waterproof All Weather

4.6(736 ratings)

UltraMax polyester with PU top coat and undercoat, heat taped seams, integrated heat-resistant panels, Perma-venting, 1 inch security grommets, compression bag, lifetime warranty.

Sizes: Medium, Large, X-Large, XX-Large, Adventure, Sport Bike, plus a Touring Half Cover. Universal fit across cruiser, sport, touring and adventure bikes.

The other name that appears in every roundup of this category, and one of only three covers here with integrated heat-resistant panels over the exhaust.

The construction case is strong: UltraMax fabric with a PU coating on both faces, heat taped seams, a claimed 100 percent waterproof, a Perma-venting system for permanent air circulation, a soft windshield liner, 1 inch security grommets at the front wheel and a lifetime warranty.

The most informative review is from an owner who came to it after a failure: "I had already spent over $100 from Ktm for their supposedly waterproof indoor outdoor motorcycle cover and literally within 3 to 4 months, the elements dissolved the seams." Paying OEM money is no guarantee of anything in this category.

On the fit and the wind: "The fit is on point and has given me no problems with alarmed disc brake locks at 3 o'clock position on windy days (unlike my last cover)." And a 2024 owner on coverage: "Covers below the axles front and rear ensuring that my bike stays covered."

Two quirks. Because it seals so well, it becomes wildlife habitat. The same owner: "That is the only downside: spiders flock to it for cover from the elements, because it covers so well." And the compression bag looks like packaging, so more than one owner has nearly torn it opening the parcel.

Note also that the Touring Half Cover sold under the same range does NOT have heat protection, which one owner points out directly. If you are buying from this family specifically for the heat panels, buy the full cover.

Like Dowco, Nelson-Rigg publishes no hydrostatic figure.

What owners say: “The fit is on point and has given me no problems with alarmed disc brake locks at 3 o'clock position on windy days (unlike my last cover). The wind and rain resistance is great. - JMin”

Features
  • Integrated heat-resistant panels over the exhaust area
  • Perma-venting system for permanent air circulation
  • UltraMax polyester with PU top and undercoating, heat taped seams
  • Soft windshield liner to protect the screen
  • 1 inch security grommets at the front wheel for a cable lock
  • Lifetime warranty, compression bag included
Pros
  • One of only three covers here with real heat panels
  • Full elastic hem plus quick-release belly strap
  • Covers below the axles front and rear
  • Lifetime warranty from an established brand
Cons
  • No published hydrostatic rating
  • Seals so well that spiders nest under it
  • The Touring Half Cover in the same range has no heat protection
  • Compression bag is easy to mistake for packaging

Platinum Shield Motorcycle Cover with FleeceGuard Inner Lining
5

Platinum Shield Motorcycle Cover with FleeceGuard Inner Lining

4.7(10 ratings)

Marine-grade polyester, reflective silver UV coating, FleeceGuard soft lining across the whole cover, double-stitched welded seams, air vents, reinforced grommets, wind straps.

Sized purely by overall bike length in five bands: up to 80 in, 80-89 in, 89-98 in, 98-110 in, 110-120 in. Measure the bike including any tour pack overhang.

Included for one feature that nothing else here has: the soft fleece lining runs across the entire cover rather than just a patch over the windshield. If the paint on your bike is the reason you are reading this, that is the relevant difference.

Sizing is honest and useful, done purely by overall bike length in five bands up to 120 inches, which is the longest here. You measure your bike including the tour pack and pick the band. No model guessing.

The owner report that matters is from someone who replaced an OEM cover with it: "I bought this to replace an OEM cover. That OEM cover is only 4-months old and has performed poorly, the main deficiency being not water proof. This new cover is superior in every way: The material is heavier yet pliable."

Now the two things that stop it being the top pick. First, the specification. The marketing says weatherproof, but the Amazon spec field on the same page reads Water Resistance Level: Water Resistant, not waterproof. For $125 that distinction matters, and it is the seller's own field.

Second, there is no heat shield mentioned anywhere on the listing, which is a real gap on a Harley with pipes down the right side at hem height.

And only 10 ratings, so there is no long-term durability signal at all. Buy it for the full fleece lining and the length-band sizing, not on review weight.

What owners say: “I bought this to replace an OEM cover. That OEM cover is only 4-months old and has performed poorly, the main deficiency being not water proof. This new cover is superior in every way. - HAL 9000”

Features
  • FleeceGuard soft lining across the whole cover, not just a windshield patch
  • Sized by overall bike length in five bands up to 120 inches
  • Marine-grade polyester with a reflective silver UV coating outside
  • Double-stitched and welded seams
  • Elastic hems, reinforced grommets and built-in wind straps
  • Limited lifetime warranty
Pros
  • Full-cover fleece lining, unique in this set
  • Length-band sizing removes the model guesswork
  • Longest size band here at 110 to 120 inches
  • Chosen over an OEM cover by one owner
Cons
  • Own Amazon spec field says Water Resistant, not waterproof

Mid-price waterproof: $50 to $70, and where the published ratings live

420D and 600D Oxford, taped seams, published hydrostatic numbers, and cuts designed specifically around a Harley Touring bike with saddlebags and a tour pack. No heat panels in this group, so mind the cooling time. This is where most riders should be shopping.

Rosefray 600D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring, Side and Top Box Cuts
6

Rosefray 600D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring, Side and Top Box Cuts

4.6(1,456 ratings)

100 percent 600D multi-layer Oxford, 6.8 lb. Glued seams, antenna hole, double side vents, ABS lock hole, full-circumference elastic plus centre buckle, storage bag.

Six sizes: 86 in XL, 96 in XXL, 108 in 3XL, Side Box, Side+Top box and Trike. The 110 in Side+Top box measures 110 x 43.3 x 53 in.

The heaviest fabric in the mid-price group by a distance: 600D Oxford at 6.8 lb, roughly double a typical 420D cover and three times a 210D one. If your complaint about previous covers was that they felt like a bin liner, this is the answer.

A 2025 Road Glide owner: "Best cover I've had from Amazon. At least 4 times thicker then other brands. Fit my 2025 road glide like a glove very satisfied. If you're looking for a cover that actually fits your bike this is the one."

A 2010 Street Glide owner who expected the worst: "I needed a cover for my 2010 Street Glide and figured at this price it would basically be a glorified tarp. Nope. This thing is legitimately impressive."

Six sizes including dedicated Side Box, Side+Top box and Trike cuts, glued seams, an antenna hole in the rear, double side ventilation openings and a full-circumference elastic band with a centre windproof buckle.

The warning comes from the five-star reviewer himself and it is important: "If you have a tour pack this cover most likely will not fit." He is talking about the Side Box cut. Buy the Side+Top box option if you run a tour pack, and read the cut name rather than the length.

Two other limits. There is one ABS lock hole in the front section only, so you cannot run a cable through two reinforced points. And there is no heat shield and no published cooling time on a fabric this heavy, which will scorch on a hot pipe like anything else.

One more data point that says something about the cover: a UK owner's five-star review reads "Best trike cover until some one stole it."

What owners say: “Best cover I've had from Amazon. At least 4 times thicker then other brands. Fit my 2025 road glide like a glove. - Brandon Sangster”

Features
  • 600D Oxford at 6.8 lb, the heaviest fabric in the mid-price group
  • Six sizes including Side Box, Side+Top box and Trike cuts
  • Glued seams and an antenna hole in the rear
  • Double side ventilation openings
  • ABS lock hole in the front section
  • Full-circumference elastic band plus a centre windproof buckle
Pros
  • Genuinely thick fabric that owners notice immediately
  • Dedicated tour pack and trike cuts
  • 1,456 ratings at 4.6
  • Storage bag and antenna hole included
Cons
  • The Side Box cut does not clear a tour pack - buy Side+Top box
  • Only one lock hole, at the front
  • No heat shield and no published cooling time
  • No published hydrostatic figure
  • Loose on smaller machines

Favoto 420D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Davidson, 25,000 Pa Waterproof
7

Favoto 420D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Davidson, 25,000 Pa Waterproof

4.6(107 ratings)

420D grid Oxford, published 25,000 Pa water resistance, heat-sealed seam tape, side vents, fabric lock holes, elastic hem plus two windproof buckles, zippered bag, two reflective pull handles.

Sizes: 96.5 in XXL, 108 in Side Box, 110 in Side+Top Box. The 110 in measures 110 L x 43.3 W x 55 H with a widened rear for saddlebags and a top box together.

The highest published waterproof figure in this entire guide: 25,000 Pa, roughly 2500 mm hydrostatic head. That is well beyond what a stationary cover needs, which is the point - it gives margin for wind driving rain into the fabric rather than just resting on it.

The 110 inch version is cut with a widened rear specifically so a tour pack and saddlebags both fit, which is the single most common sizing problem on a Harley Touring bike.

An owner on the wind and water together: "I have been using this cover and it's completely water proof and clips to the bike even in the worst wind storm out had not blown off and had not ripped at all." Another: "The waterproof material does a good job." And on fit: "Bought to cover a Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail. Fit is perfect. Great fabric and construction."

The triple fastening system is fabric lock holes plus the elastic hem plus two windproof buckles, and there is heat-sealed tape on the inside of the seams. A zippered storage bag and two reflective pull handles are included, which is a small thing until you are pulling a wet cover off in the dark.

Limits. Only 107 ratings, so there is no multi-season durability record. One owner wanted heavier cloth: "I would have liked it to be a little heavier material, but all things considered im totally satisfied." The 110 inch Side+Top Box cut runs loose on a bike without a tour pack. And there is no heat shield and no published cooling time.

What owners say: “It's completely water proof and clips to the bike even in the worst wind storm out had not blown off and had not ripped at all. - Thomas schuster”

Features
  • Published 25,000 Pa water resistance, the highest figure in this guide
  • Widened rear cut so a tour pack and saddlebags both fit
  • 420D grid Oxford with a soft PU coated inner face
  • Side air vents plus heat-sealed seam tape inside
  • Fabric lock holes, elastic hem and two windproof buckles
  • Zippered storage bag and two reflective pull handles
Pros
  • Highest published waterproof rating here
  • Cut specifically around a tour pack
  • Confirmed to hold in a bad wind storm by an owner
  • Reflective pull handles and a proper zippered bag
Cons
  • Only 107 ratings, no multi-season record
  • Fabric lighter than the 600D alternatives
  • The 110 in cut is baggy without a tour pack
  • No heat shield and no cooling time published
  • Two buckles rather than three

Benlari 420D Motorcycle Cover with Side and Top Box, 116 in XL
8

Benlari 420D Motorcycle Cover with Side and Top Box, 116 in XL

4.6(221 ratings)

High-density 420D double-layer Oxford with PU or silver coating, published 15000PA, sealed double-stitched taped seams, dual vents plus handlebar vent holes, ABS lock holes, three buckle straps, storage bag.

Sizes: S 87 in Sportster, M 87 in Cruiser, L 107 in Touring, XL 116 x 47 x 53 in Touring Ultra. The XL has a widened rear and a zippered rear opening for antennas.

The longest full cover in the mid-price group at 116 inches, and the one to look at if you have a full dresser with a tour pack and a rack behind it.

Three adjustable buckle straps plus a full elastic hem, which is the fastening arrangement that actually holds on a big bike. Published 15000PA with sealed double-stitched taped seams, built-in vents plus reserved ventilation holes at the handlebars, ABS anti-theft lock holes at the front wheel in the plural, and a zippered rear opening so antennas pass through without leaving a gap.

An owner with a full-size Touring Harley: "Definitely a great cover. Thick fabric. Rain proof. Plenty of straps to secure it to the bike. Perfect size for my full size touring HD. Vents are covered but allows for good air flow. Zippered rear for antenna." Another: "This cover has held up through rain, snow and a really high wind storm. Very impressive."

Two practical annoyances. The size steps are coarse: "It's too big for my bike, and the smaller one is too small. There's 20in between sizes, wish they made 96in like other brands." And the front elastic catches on engine guards going on: "elastic on front tends to catch on lowers as you are putting it on."

One inconsistency to note: the Amazon material field says Polyvinyl Chloride while the bullets say 420D Oxford, so the spec panel on this listing is not reliable. And as with the rest of this group, no heat shield and no published cooling time.

What owners say: “Definitely a great cover. Thick fabric. Rain proof. Plenty of straps to secure it to the bike. Perfect size for my full size touring HD. Zippered rear for antenna. - Chris Slaughter”

Features
  • 116 inch XL, the longest full cover in the mid-price group
  • Widened rear plus a zippered rear opening for antennas
  • Published 15000PA with sealed double-stitched taped seams
  • Three adjustable buckle straps plus a full elastic hem
  • ABS anti-theft lock holes at the front wheel
  • Covered vents plus reserved handlebar ventilation holes
Pros
  • Three straps, which is the number that works on a bagger
  • Long enough for a full dresser with a rack
  • Zippered antenna opening that still seals

  • Twenty inches between size steps
  • Front elastic snags on engine guards during fitting
  • Amazon material field contradicts the bullets
  • No heat shield and no cooling time

MIEAPOND 420D Plaid Oxford Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring
9

MIEAPOND 420D Plaid Oxford Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring

4.6(563 ratings)

420D plaid weave Oxford, 2.9 lb, published 10,000 PA, double stitching with waterproof strip taping, side vents, three windproof buckles, elastic drawstrings front and rear, reflective strips.

Sizes named by bike length: 96 in Sportster, 104 in Cruiser, 108 in Touring, 110 in Touring Ultra. The 108 in measures 108 L x 41 W x 52 H and names Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide, Electra Glide, Heritage Classic and Low Rider.

The clearest sizing in this group: four sizes named by actual bike length in inches rather than by letters, with a model list attached to each. That alone removes most of the ordering mistakes in this category.

The plaid weave is chosen for tear resistance rather than just water, and the published figure is 10,000 PA against a claimed 3,000 PA for most covers on the market.

The review worth reading twice is the one that explains the paint problem better than anything else in this research: "Much heavier than the last one I bought and fits much better. I like the two straps front and back and the extra strap that I put around the center of the bike. Keeps the flapping down which has really hurt the paint in the past." That is the mechanism, from an owner who lived it.

Another: "One of the best covers I've had in years. Thick, durable, straps on the back, front and a middle strap included." And: "Perfect for outdoor storage of your bike. Great coverage and doesn't blow off. Easy to put on with only one person."

Three windproof buckles including a centre belly strap, side vents, taped waterproof strips at the seams, and reflective strips for night visibility.

The limits are what is absent rather than what is wrong. No heat shield is claimed anywhere, so the cooling wait applies in full. Lock grommets are not mentioned in the bullets, so a cable through the cover is not a designed-in feature. And the longest size is 110 inches, which is tight for a full dresser with a tour pack plus a luggage rack behind it.

What owners say: “I like the two straps front and back and the extra strap that I put around the center of the bike. Keeps the flapping down which has really hurt the paint in the past. - Amazon Customer”

KEMIMOTO Heavy Duty 420D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring Models
10

KEMIMOTO Heavy Duty 420D Motorcycle Cover for Harley Touring Models

4.6(874 ratings)

420D Oxford body with 150D accent panels, both PU coated. Published 2000 mmH2O, about 20,000 Pa. 99 percent UV protection claimed. Cut for Touring with side boxes and a top box.

Three cuts: Cruiser, Touring/Touring Ultra, Trike. Designed to fit Touring with side boxes and top boxes or without. Names Road King, and the Trike version has a velcro rear seam for antennas.

The cheapest cover here that is cut specifically for a Harley Touring bike with luggage, and the one whose listing is unusually honest about its own weakness.

Value first. A Tri Glide Ultra owner: "Save yourself some $$$$$ and buy this cover! Fits my 2013 Tri-Glide Ultra like a glove! I have flags mounted on top of my tour pack and they are no issue. Velcro closure in the rear seam allows my antennas to stick out." Another: "Great value, this cover has many of the qualities of the HD premium cover for 1/2 the price!" And on the rain: "Covered my 2001 Honda Goldwing 1800 abs trike perfectly. First night I used it, it thunder stormed. Next morning trike was bone dry."

Published 2000 mmH2O, about 20,000 Pa, with a 99 percent UV protection claim in the Amazon spec panel.

Now the honesty. The listing itself warns: "Do not immediately use it after a driving when the engine is pretty hot, and it will burn the Oxford Fabric cover off." No other seller in this set states the failure mode that plainly in its own sales copy. Treat it as the category-wide warning it really is.

Other limits. There is no soft windshield liner - a four-star owner names that as the reason: "This cover lacks the soft liner that protects the windshield." The Touring cut assumes a trunk, so it is baggy at the rear without one: "They have a bunch of webbing on the rear to take up the slack for no trunk. Looks ugly." A one-star buyer rejected the fabric outright as too rough for an expensive bike. And one owner had to re-treat it after a season: "I had to waterproof the cover and haven't any leaks yet."

What owners say: “Save yourself some $$$$$ and buy this cover! Fits my 2013 Tri-Glide Ultra like a glove! Velcro closure in the rear seam allows my antennas to stick out. - Ron Altenhain”

Under $40. Two of these are genuinely good indoor covers and two are outdoor covers that their own owners describe as indoor covers. Fine in a garage, fine as a spare in the saddlebag, not the thing to leave on a bike through a winter.

WinPower Indoor Motorcycle Cover, Stretch Elastic Dust Cover

4.7(365 ratings)

High-elastic polyester stretch cloth, 15 to 20 percent elongation with full recovery, wrinkle proof. Elastic hem plus a reinforced security hook. NOT WATERPROOF, stated by the seller.

Sizes: XL 96 x 41 x 49 in, 2XL 104 x 41 x 49 in, 3XL 116 x 43 x 55 in. Owners fit the 2XL to a 2025 Street Glide. For garages and underground parking, not for rain.

The right answer for a bike that lives in a garage, and the wrong answer for anything else. The listing says so itself, in capitals: "The stretch fabric is NOT WATERPROOF due to its flexibility and elasticity. Don't use it on outdoor rainy days."

That honesty is exactly why it belongs here. A dedicated Harley Davidson indoor motorcycle cover is a different product from a waterproof one, and putting a coated outdoor cover on a bike in a dry garage gives you condensation you did not need.

A 2025 Street Glide owner: "Great cover! I ordered the 2XL for my 2025 Street Glide. Fits like a glove. Perfect for keeping the dust off in the garage between rides."

The technical case, from a thorough reviewer: "An exceptional indoor cover designed for motorcycles that deserve meticulous care. The breathable fabric allows air circulation while preventing micro-condensation, eliminating one of the main causes of hidden corrosion."

The stretch fabric has 15 to 20 percent elongation with full recovery, so it follows the bike's lines rather than bagging, and it goes on in seconds. Very soft, so paint is not a concern: "Material is very soft so that is a peace of mind when it gets very windy and not worry about scratches."

Three limits. It is thin and tears easily if you snag it. There is no lock provision at all, so it offers zero theft resistance. And you still let the pipes cool: "you have to wait for the bike to cool down so that nothing gets scorched."

What owners say: “Great cover! I ordered the 2XL for my 2025 Street Glide. Fits like a glove. Perfect for keeping the dust off in the garage between rides. - Brandon”

XYZCTEM All Season Motorcycle Cover, Fits up to 116 in

XYZCTEM All Season Motorcycle Cover, Fits up to 116 in

4.5(23,028 ratings)

Oxford fabric, no denier rating published. Two aluminium lockholes, three windproof buckles, storage bag, 12 month return or exchange.

Three sizes: 96.5 in, 104 in, 116 in. The 116 in measures 116 x 43 x 55 in and clears a Gold Wing or a full dresser with tall bars.

Over twenty-three thousand ratings, which is more than every other cover in this guide combined, at $30. It is the default purchase in this category and it deserves an honest write-up rather than a dismissal.

What it does well: it is big, it is cheap, it has two aluminium lockholes and three windproof buckles, and the seller offers a 12 month return or exchange. A Vulcan owner with 16 inch ape hangers and crash bars: "It fit over the handlebars." Another: "I love this bike cover it's Lightweight and smooth On the inside so it does not scratch or scuff my paint."

What it does not do is last. The single most useful review in this whole article is the Texas owner's one-year update: "My first cover, for the Goldwing, has been sitting on my wing in direct Texas sun for one year this month. It has begun to get tears in the fabric where it fits over the plexiglass windscreen." That is the windshield failure mode, documented with a timeline.

Another owner titles his five-star review "Good but lasts only 2 years." A four-star owner is blunter about the fabric: "It is thin but work for inside storage." And a three-star owner on the shape: "This is essentially a poorly shaped tent. I can't emphasize that enough."

The waterproof claim is the vaguest here: the bullets say water repellent while the Amazon spec field says Waterproof, and there is no mm or Pa figure anywhere. No vents are listed. No heat shield.

Buy it as a two-year consumable, a spare, or an indoor cover. Do not buy it expecting the Dowco.

What owners say: “My first cover, for the Goldwing, has been sitting on my wing in direct Texas sun for one year this month. It has begun to get tears in the fabric where it fits over the plexiglass windscreen. - Mike Hugman”

Features

  • Three lengths, 96.5, 104 and 116 inches
  • Two aluminium lockholes and three windproof buckles
  • Storage bag included, packs small enough for a saddlebag
  • 12 month return or exchange offered by the seller
  • Marketed as non abrasive so it does not scuff paint
Pros
  • Genuinely covers a big bike
  • Two lockholes plus three buckles at this price
  • Enormous review base to read through
  • 12 month seller return policy
Cons
  • Tears over the windshield edge after a year in strong sun
  • Owners say roughly two years of outdoor life
  • Thin fabric that its own owners recommend for indoor use
  • No vents listed, no heat shield, no hydrostatic figure
  • Bullets say water repellent while the spec field says waterproof

Wrypun Motorcycle Cover XXXL 116 in for Harley Street Glide Touring
13

Wrypun Motorcycle Cover XXXL 116 in for Harley Street Glide Touring

4.3(1,640 ratings)

Weatherproof polyester with PU and UV coating, double stitched seams, one centre tighten strap. Listing gives an explicit oversize rule.

Sizes: 96 in, 104 in, 116 in. XXXL is 116.1 x 43.3 x 55.1 in. Owners fit it over a 2008 Electra Glide with a tour pack and a 2026 Street Glide with two backrests and a rear travel rack.

The cheapest cover here that owners actually use over a tour pack, and the listing does one thing better than any other in this set: it publishes a sizing rule. Buy 10 to 20 cm longer than the bike. That is more guidance than the $138 cover gives.

A 2026 Street Glide owner: "Great fit a 2026 street glide with Driver back rest, passenger backrest and Rear travel rack with no issues." A Gold Wing owner: "It fits my 1989 Gold Wing 1500 better than covers that cost much more, and is nicer looking and better quality than others."

And on the water, from an owner running it over an Electra Glide with a tour pack: "Rain stays outside the cover."

Then the same owner names the problem: "The fit is loose and very oversize, I'd prefer tighter to avoid whipping in wind." Which brings us to the strap.

There is one strap, in the middle. A three-star owner is direct about the marketing: "Down side is that it only has one strap that is in the middle and the 'Full bottom elastic hem' is a lie. It only has small elastic." Another: "it only has one strap under to help keep it on I would think that it would be better if it had a" second.

One belly strap on a 116 inch cover over a bagger is not enough. If you buy this one, buy the $20 gust straps with it and you have a working setup for under $50.

Also note the lock loop tore out for one owner on first fitting, and sizing complaints run in both directions - too small for a 2016 1800, too big for others.

What owners say: “Purchased as a light traveling cover for a 2008 Electra Glide with tour pack. Rain stays outside the cover. The fit is loose and very oversize, I'd prefer tighter to avoid whipping in wind. - Dave Thacker”

Features
  • 116 inch XXXL clears a Street Glide with two backrests and a rear travel rack
  • PU and UV coated polyester with double stitched seams
  • The listing publishes an explicit sizing rule: buy 10 to 20 cm longer than the bike
  • Three lengths, 96, 104 and 116 inches
  • Cheapest cover here that owners use over a tour pack
Pros
  • Fits over a tour pack and backrests
  • Published sizing rule, which most listings lack
  • Owners confirm rain stays out
  • 1,640 ratings
Cons
  • Only ONE centre belly strap on a 116 inch cover
  • Owners say the full elastic hem claim is not true
  • Loose oversize fit whips in wind
  • Lock loop tore out on first fitting for one owner
  • Sizing unreliable in both directions

ROWYEET 210D Motorcycle Cover, Fits up to 116 in
14

ROWYEET 210D Motorcycle Cover, Fits up to 116 in

4.2(2,145 ratings)

210D Oxford in a three-layer structure, the lightest fabric here. Aluminium-alloy lock holes, elastic bottom bands, two buckles at the wheels, reflective strips, 11 x 9.5 in zipper bag.

Three sizes: 96.5 in, 104 in, 116 in. Base size 96.5 x 41 x 50 in. Compatible with most motorcycles, mopeds, dirt bikes and e-bikes as well as Harleys.

Under twenty dollars, and included here because it is honest about what that buys once you read past the bullets.

The most useful review opens by saying the quiet part: "Okay this is going to be an odd review to do. I knew going in that this was NOT going to be a high quality heavy duty cover simply due to it having a $17.99 price tag." He then titles the review "Great for indoor storage, not for long term outdoor use", which is the correct verdict on the whole product.

It does have aluminium-alloy lock holes, elastic bottom bands, two buckles at the wheels, reflective strips and a small zipper bag, and it does fit: "Works great on my 2016 yamaha v star deluxe with hard saddle bags. Fits well. Stores easy and dries fast."

The fabric is 210D, half the weight of the 420D covers above and a third of the 600D. That shows up quickly. "In general the quality is good, but after 4 months start to ripped!" And: "careful not to pull it too hard or it will rip."

Note also that the Amazon spec field says Water Resistant, not waterproof, despite the bullets using the word waterproof.

Buy it as a spare that lives in a saddlebag, or as a garage dust cover, or for a bike that is not worth $60 of cover. Do not buy it to protect a Street Glide through a winter.

What owners say: “I knew going in that this was NOT going to be a high quality heavy duty cover simply due to it having a $17.99 price tag. Great for indoor storage, not for long term outdoor use. - Hodgie”

  • Reflective strips and a reflective pull handle
  • Compact 11 by 9.5 inch zipper storage bag

  • Lock holes and buckles
  • Packs very small for a saddlebag spare
  • Dries fast
  • 2,145 ratings

Bagger, trike and tour pack specific

Covers cut for the shape rather than just the length: a widened rear for a tour pack, the three wheel track of a Tri Glide or Freewheeler, an antenna opening that still seals, and a half cover for a hot bike parked in the sun.

LTANGOLD Tour Pack Motorcycle Cover for Harley Ultra Limited and Road Glide
15

LTANGOLD Tour Pack Motorcycle Cover for Harley Ultra Limited and Road Glide

4.5(44 ratings)

High-density 420D square-patterned Oxford with PU coating, published 8000MM, heat-sealed double-stitched seams, dual vents, reinforced lock holes front AND rear, full-perimeter elastic hem with drawstrings, zippered bag with handles.

Sold as Touring, Touring Ultra and Cruiser sets rather than by inches. Engineered specifically for Harley full-dresser models including Ultra Limited, Road Glide Limited and Street Glide Ultra with a Tour Pak.

The only cover in this guide whose title and bullets are written around a Tour Pak rather than mentioning it as an afterthought, and the only one with reinforced lock holes at both front and rear.

That second point matters more than it sounds. Every other cover here gives you one lock hole at the front. Two reinforced points is what lets you actually run a cable through the cover and around something solid at both ends, which is the only arrangement that both secures the cover and stops it lifting.

The wind report is the strongest in this research. A 2006 Road King Classic owner: "I bought this cover for my '06 Road King Classic a few months ago and this cover is amazing. The straps that help keep the cover 'tighter' haven't budged or shown wear after three incredible windstorms."

A 2015 Road Glide owner: "Item fits my 2015 road glide perfectly." And: "It's one of the best motorcycle covers I bought yet on Amazon. Will buy again."

Published 8000MM hydrostatic rating, heat-sealed double-stitched seams, dual air vents, a full-perimeter elastic hem with front and rear drawstrings, a clear FRONT label printed on the cover so you do not fit it backwards in the dark, and a zippered bag with reinforced handles rather than a drawstring pouch.

The reservations are all about sample size and fabric feel. Only 44 ratings. The fabric is stiff rather than supple, and one owner doubts it in winter: "Fabric is a bit rigid, probably wouldn't last in winter weather." Another: "A little light weight, but it's a good cover so far."

The real weakness of the listing is that it publishes no bike length figures at all, only Touring, Touring Ultra and Cruiser, so you cannot measure before you buy.

What owners say: “The straps that help keep the cover 'tighter' haven't budged or shown wear after three incredible windstorms. - Gerry Raia, 2006 Road King Classic”

Features
  • Written and cut specifically around a Harley Tour Pak
  • Reinforced lock holes at BOTH front and rear, unique in this set
  • Published 8000MM rating with heat-sealed double-stitched seams
  • Dual air vents against condensation
  • Full-perimeter elastic hem plus front and rear adjustable drawstrings
  • Clear FRONT label on the cover and a zippered bag with handles
Pros
  • The tour pack cover, designed as one rather than adapted
  • Two reinforced lock points, which nothing else here offers
  • Survived three windstorms per an owner
  • FRONT label removes a small but real annoyance
Cons
  • No bike length figures published, only size names
  • Only 44 ratings and no long-term reports
  • Fabric is stiff rather than supple
  • One owner doubts it in winter weather
  • No heat shield and no cooling time published

LI LIBZAKI 420D Motorcycle Cover with Side and Top Box, 110 in
16

LI LIBZAKI 420D Motorcycle Cover with Side and Top Box, 110 in

4.6(96 ratings)

420D Oxford with taped waterproof seam strips, antenna opening, double side vents, ABS lock hole, full-circumference adjustable elastic plus a central windproof buckle, storage bag.

Sizes: 86 in XL, 96 in XXL, 107 in Side Box, 110 in Side+Top Box, 115 in Trike. The 110 in Side+Top Box measures 110 L x 43 W x 55 H. Does NOT fit a Street Glide 3 trike despite the Trike option.

A dedicated 110 inch Side+Top Box cut for a full dresser, with the useful detail of an antenna opening and taped waterproof strips at the seams.

The durability report is the best thing about it. An Electra Glide owner: "A very good motorcycle cover. It fits most of my motorcycles and fits well on my Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. The material is very thick, and I've had it for two years with no complaints."

Two years with no complaints, from an owner who uses it across several bikes, is a stronger signal than most of the five-star one-liners in this category.

Another: "A little more expensive than other covers on Amazon, but you get what you pay for. Quality fabric, an excellent fit, and secure." And a VTX 1800 owner: "It's waterproof and has an opening for my antenna."

Five sizes including a 115 inch Trike option, double side ventilation openings, an ABS lock hole in the front section and a full-circumference adjustable elastic band with a central buckle.

The important caution is about that Trike size. A three-star owner: "It doesn't fit our 2026 Harley Street Glide 3 Trike. Very disappointed." The same owner on the shape and the strap: "it has only one strap and it has to go under the center. Way too big at the passenger armrest area and so tight at the fenders."

So: good on a two-wheel full dresser, questionable on a Street Glide 3. And one strap plus one lock hole is the standard mid-price limitation.

What owners say: “The material is very thick, and I've had it for two years with no complaints. It's an excellent product. - Barmaley”

Features
  • Dedicated 110 inch Side+Top Box cut for a full dresser with a tour pack
  • 420D Oxford with taped waterproof strips at the seams
  • Antenna opening for Harley and Gold Wing aerials
  • Double side ventilation openings
  • ABS lock hole in the front section
  • Five sizes including a 115 inch Trike option
Pros
  • Two years of use with no complaints from one owner
  • Thick fabric that owners notice
  • Antenna opening included
  • Dedicated tour pack cut
Cons
  • Does not fit a 2026 Street Glide 3 trike despite the Trike option
  • Only one belly strap, under the centre

KEMIMOTO 3 Wheel 420D Trike Cover with Antenna Opening
17

KEMIMOTO 3 Wheel 420D Trike Cover with Antenna Opening

4.6(874 ratings)

420D Oxford body with 150D accent panels, PU coated. Published 2000 mmH2O, about 20,000 Pa. Velcro closure in the rear seam for antennas. Adjustable cinch at the top.

Cut for the three wheel track of a Tri Glide, Freewheeler, CVO trike and Gold Wing trike. Sold on the same twister as Cruiser and Touring/Touring Ultra cuts - choose the Trike option.

A trike is not a long motorcycle, it is a wide one, and a longer two-wheel cover will not do the job. This is the trike cut, and the velcro rear seam is the detail that makes it work on a Harley.

A 2013 Tri Glide Ultra owner: "Fits my 2013 Tri-Glide Ultra like a glove! I have flags mounted on top of my tour pack and they are no issue. Velcro closure in the rear seam allows my antennas to stick out." A Gold Wing trike owner: "Covered my 2001 Honda Goldwing 1800 abs trike perfectly. First night I used it, it thunder stormed. Next morning trike was bone dry." And simply: "Fit our triglide perfectly."

Published 2000 mmH2O, roughly 20,000 Pa, with an adjustable cinch at the top so you can pull the cover tight rather than leaving it to flap. One owner specifically praises that: "I love that you can tighten them up, and they really do a great job."

Two things to accept. The same owner explains why he keeps buying them: "I have had several of these covers, because the southern sun is hard on things." This is a consumable in strong UV, not a lifetime purchase.

And the heat warning applies here as much as anywhere, because it is the same fabric with the same listing text: hot pipes "will burn the Oxford Fabric cover off". A trike sits low and the cover reaches everything.

What owners say: “Fits my 2013 Tri-Glide Ultra like a glove! I have flags mounted on top of my tour pack and they are no issue. Velcro closure in the rear seam allows my antennas to stick out. - Ron Altenhain”

Features
  • Cut for the three wheel track width of a Tri Glide, Freewheeler or Gold Wing trike
  • Velcro closure in the rear seam so antennas pass through and the seam still seals
  • 420D Oxford body with 150D accent panels, both PU coated
  • Published 2000 mmH2O, about 20,000 Pa
  • Adjustable cinch at the top to pull the cover tight
  • Clears flags mounted on a tour pack per one owner
Pros
  • A proper trike cut rather than a longer two-wheel cover
  • Velcro antenna seam that still seals
  • Confirmed dry after a thunderstorm on a trike
  • 874 ratings at 4.6
Cons
  • Southern UV eats them and owners re-buy
  • Its own listing warns hot pipes will burn the fabric off
  • Vents and lock provision not stated
  • One-word three-star review: fragile
  • The Touring cut of the same product is baggy without a trunk

Tokept Motorcycle Half Cover for Harley Touring, No Cooling Wait
18

Tokept Motorcycle Half Cover for Harley Touring, No Cooling Wait

4.2(23 ratings)

210D polyester with waterproof coating, front half only. Four hooks with elastic middle pair, shrinking elasticized hem, horizontal reflective strip, carry bag.

One universal size for most full dress, touring and cruiser bikes. Covers the front half only. Reported not to fit a 2022 Gold Wing bagger or a Softail.

The answer to the heat problem, and to the problem of parking in the sun for eight hours at work.

A half cover drapes the front of the bike - screen, bars, tank, seat - and never reaches the exhaust. So there is no cooling wait at all. Owners buy it for exactly that. One in Phoenix: "got this to cover my HD FLHTK in Phoenix, AZ when I go to the gym at 2:00 pm when it is 100 degrees + no shade. It keeps my seat and handlebars cooler than sitting in the hot sun."

Another puts the appeal in one line: "This is the best idea ever before the old covers. You have to wait till it cooled off before you put it on, not now. This one is awesome."

And on the practicality: "This cover is perfect to keep the hot summer sun off my Harley, and it's quick and easy to use. It takes up a small space in my saddlebag."

It packs into a supplied bag small enough to carry, has four hooks with the middle pair elastic, an elasticized shrinking hem and a horizontal reflective strip so you can tell front from back in the dark.

Be clear about what it is not. It covers the front half only, so the rear wheel, exhaust and lower bodywork stay exposed to rain and grit. It is a sun and dust cover for a bike you are coming back to, not overnight or winter protection.

The build reservations are real at only 23 ratings: three of four J-hooks arrived broken for one owner, and fitment complaints came from a Gold Wing bagger owner (too large) and a Softail owner (does not fit).

What owners say: “Great cover, got this to cover my HD FLHTK in Phoenix, AZ when I go to the gym at 2:00 pm when it is 100 degrees + no shade. It keeps my seat and handlebars cooler that sitting in the hot sun. - Paul H Phillips”

Features
  • Front half only, so it goes straight onto a warm bike with no cooling wait
  • 210D polyester with a waterproof coating, light and soft
  • Four hooks, the middle pair elastic, plus an elasticized shrinking hem
  • Horizontal reflective strip so you can tell front from back at night
  • Packs into a supplied bag small enough for a saddlebag
  • Designed for full dress, touring and cruiser bikes
Pros
  • Solves the cooling wait entirely
  • Keeps the seat and bars cool in a hot car park
  • Lives in a saddlebag
  • Quick to fit one-handed
Cons
  • Covers the front half only - rear wheel and exhaust stay exposed
  • Three of four J-hooks arrived broken for one owner
  • Does not fit a 2022 Gold Wing bagger or a Softail per owners
  • Only 23 ratings
  • No rain testing reported by the reviewer who found the hook fault

The parts that make a cover work properly

A cable lock, extra gust straps, a clamp-on exhaust shield and desiccant for winter storage. Together they cost less than the difference between a mid-price and a premium cover, and they fix the four things that actually go wrong.

Master Lock 715DAT Cover Cable with Padlock, 7 ft
19

Master Lock 715DAT Cover Cable with Padlock, 7 ft

4.6(1,847 ratings)

7 ft vinyl-coated braided steel cable sized to pass through cover grommets, laminated steel padlock body 1-1/8 in, warded mechanism chosen to resist dirt, two keys.

Universal. Designed for car cover grommets, which is the same fitting on a motorcycle cover. Run it through the front grommet and around the wheel or a frame member.

Eleven dollars, and it solves two of the problems in this article at once: the cover blowing off, and the cover being stolen.

The cable is 7 ft of braided steel with a vinyl coating so it does not scratch paint or a rim, and it is specifically sized to pass through cover grommets. The padlock has a laminated steel body and a warded mechanism chosen to resist jamming from grit, which matters on something that lives outdoors.

Owners: "Great quality. Secures your car cover. Thicker cable and strong lock. Unbelievable price." And: "Works good to secure my cover and gives me peace of mind that it will not be stolen."

Be honest about what it is, though, and one owner is: "Little deterant but better than nothing." A warded padlock is among the easiest lock types to pick. This protects a $60 cover from walking off and stops the wind lifting it. It does not protect the motorcycle. That is a disc lock and a chain, and a different purchase entirely.

One practical note: 7 ft is generous around a motorcycle front wheel, so you will have a loop of slack to tuck away. A two-star owner found it only just long enough for a car, which tells you it is comfortably sized for a bike.

What owners say: “Great quality. Secures your car cover. Thicker cable and strong lock. Unbelievable price. - charles palmenteri”

Features
  • 7 ft braided steel cable sized specifically for cover grommets
  • Vinyl coating so it does not scratch paint or a wheel rim
  • Laminated steel padlock body 1-1/8 in with a steel shackle
  • Warded mechanism chosen to resist jamming from dirt and grime
  • Two keys supplied
  • Under eleven dollars
Pros
  • Stops the cover being stolen and stops it blowing off
  • Vinyl coated so it will not mark a rim
  • Comfortably long for a motorcycle front wheel
  • 1,847 ratings
Cons
  • Warded padlock is easy to pick - a deterrent, not security
  • Protects the cover, not the motorcycle
  • 7 ft leaves a loop of slack to tuck away
  • Basic lock that some owners replace

Lucky Straps Gust Straps, 6 Clips and 3 Bungees
20

Lucky Straps Gust Straps, 6 Clips and 3 Bungees

4.4(246 ratings)

Six screw-tightened toothed clips plus three 50 in bungees of UV-stable polyester-wrapped rubber, drawstring bag. Adds three tie-down points anywhere on a cover with no grommet needed.

Universal. Marketed for car covers, but the clip and bungee principle transfers directly to any motorcycle cover with only one belly strap - which is the most common weakness in this whole category.

If your cover has one belly strap and it flaps, this is the twenty dollar fix, and it is a better use of money than replacing a cover that is otherwise fine.

Six toothed clips tighten onto the cover fabric anywhere you like, no grommet required, and three 50 inch bungees run underneath between them. That turns a one-strap cover into a four-point cover.

The review that matches the problem exactly: "The set that came with my car cover was awful. The clips would come off during high wind and the cover would blow off. These have solved the problem. Having three sets especially in high wind is a game changer." Another: "It came with just two straps which were not enough to keep it on the car in very high winds. These solved that problem."

The bungee is rubber wrapped in high-strength polyester rather than polypropylene, which is the detail that determines whether it survives a summer in the sun.

Two things to plan for on a bike rather than a car. The toothed clips bite the fabric, so on a thin 210D cover they will eventually mark or tear it - use them on a 420D or heavier. And nothing on the packaging addresses routing a bungee near a hot Harley exhaust, so run them well clear of the pipes and check them the first few times.

Reaching the far end under the bike is easier than under a car, which is the one thing that gets complained about in the car-owner reviews.

What owners say: “The clips would come off during high wind and the cover would blow off. These have solved the problem. Having three sets especially in high wind is a game changer. - Shelly”

Features
  • Six clips and three 50 inch bungees, adding three tie-down points to any cover
  • Screw-tightened toothed clips grip fabric without needing a grommet
  • UV-stable polyester-wrapped rubber rather than polypropylene
  • Fits vehicles 4.2 to 8.8 ft wide, so plenty of length under a bike
  • 24 month return policy stated on the listing
  • Drawstring storage bag included
Pros
  • Turns a one-strap cover into a properly secured one
  • No grommet needed - clip anywhere on the fabric
  • UV-stable cord that survives sun
  • Cheaper than replacing a cover that is otherwise good
Cons
  • Toothed clips can mark or tear a thin 210D cover
  • Nothing on the packaging about routing away from a hot exhaust
  • Marketed for cars, so no bike-specific guidance
  • Straps can be short on very wide vehicles

Rhinowalk Universal Motorcycle Exhaust Heat Shield

4.3(103 ratings)

Clamp-on aluminium alloy plate with hose clamp and screw. Medium is 6.5 x 3 x 1 in, 0.33 lb. Stands fabric roughly an inch off the pipe.

For motorcycles without a factory exhaust heat shield. Clamps to the pipe. Sold in Medium and a larger L size.

Twelve dollars against the cost of a melted cover, and the answer if your Harley's pipes run bare where the cover hem sits.

It is a clamp-on aluminium plate that stands soft material about an inch off the exhaust. It is sold for protecting soft luggage, and the reviews are all from that use, but the physics is identical for cover fabric.

An owner: "This keeps the heat of my Termignoni out of my Enduristan bags. Totally worth it." Another: "Easy install. Stays in place. Cheap peace of mind when your expensive bags are right on the hot exhaust." And a distance test: "Bought it to protect my saddlebags. Went on easily and easy to position properly. Did a 1,200 km trip and the bags suffered no heat damage, so it works."

The honest caveats. The plate is small - a two-star owner: "the shield is a bit small. It needs to position the bag about another 1/4 inch away from the exhaust." The hose clamp is the weak part and has failed on first tightening for two separate owners: "the hose clamp assembly came apart under the slightest pressure so I had to re-attach to the band." It can scuff the chrome where it clamps. And no instructions are supplied.

Buy it if you cover a warm bike often and the cover you own has no heat panel. If you can simply wait fifteen minutes instead, wait fifteen minutes.

What owners say: “This keeps the heat of my Termignoni out of my Enduristan bags. Totally worth it. Be aware that it can leave scuffs on your exhaust, so take measures against this. - Ronald”

wisedry Rechargeable Silica Gel Dehumidifier, 4 x 500 g

4.6(18,278 ratings)

Four 500 g rechargeable silica gel bags, 4.4 lb total. Each bag adsorbs 150 g of moisture, up to 180 g maximum. Microwave rechargeable in 10 to 16 minutes, reusable more than 10 times.

Not bike specific. For a covered bike, place a bag on the floor either side of the front wheel and one near the rear. Also used in gun safes, boats, basements and RVs.

The cheap insurance policy for a bike going under a cover for a whole winter, and the answer to the condensation problem that a vented cover only partly solves.

Each 500 g bag pulls about 150 g of water out of the air around it, up to 180 g maximum. Put one either side of the front wheel and one at the rear under the cover and you have removed a meaningful amount of the moisture that would otherwise condense on cold metal every night.

Owners use them for exactly this class of problem. "This desiccant is EXTREMELY good. One little bag is enough for a compact SUV." And on the mechanism: "A month ago I never would've guessed the answer to my cars' inside window fogging problems could be as simple as a giant version of the same thing I've seen in shoeboxes." A pickup owner found condensation was wetting his registration stickers off the windshield until he used them.

They recharge in a microwave in 10 to 16 minutes and are reusable more than ten times, so this is a one-off purchase rather than a consumable. The listing warns not to recharge below 650 g, so weigh the bag first.

Two limits. The plain version has no colour indicator, so you cannot see saturation at a glance - the Visible variant costs more. And 150 g per bag is small against an open carport or a leaking cover. This works under a sealed cover in a still garage or a dry carport, not in the open.

What owners say: “This desiccant is EXTREMELY good. One little bag is enough for a compact SUV. We used these in a car camping setting and everything stayed nice and dry all night. - Bekka”

Harley Motorcycle Covers - FAQs

What is the best motorcycle cover for a Harley-Davidson?
For a Harley living outdoors all year, the Dowco WeatherAll Plus is the reference: cotton heat shields, a vented moisture system, a soft windshield liner and a published ten minute cooling time, at around $138. For most riders a 420D Oxford cover at $50 to $70 with a published hydrostatic rating, three tie-down points and a cut that allows for a tour pack does the same job for half the money, with the caveat that it has no heat panel. For a garage, a stretch indoor cover at about $40 is the right answer and a waterproof cover is the wrong one.
Is it bad to leave a motorcycle outside with a cover?
Far better than leaving it uncovered, and worse than a garage. The cover stops UV, bird droppings, tree sap and grit, which is most of what destroys a bike parked outside. What it does not stop is damp rising from the ground, condensation if you covered a wet bike or the cover has no vents, or theft. Cover a clean, dry, cooled bike, use a vented cover with three tie-down points, put something under the bike on damp ground, keep a battery maintainer on it, and expect to replace the cover every two to four years.
How long should you let a Harley cool before covering it?
Dowco is the only brand that publishes a figure and it is ten minutes, on a cover that has cotton heat shields built in. On a cover with no heat panel, which is most of them, allow fifteen to twenty minutes. One manufacturer states the risk in its own sales copy: hot pipes "will burn the Oxford Fabric cover off". If you routinely need to cover a hot bike, either buy a half cover that never reaches the exhaust, or fit a clamp-on aluminium exhaust shield for about $12.
Which motorcycle cover is the strongest?
By fabric weight, the 600D Oxford covers at around 6.8 lb are the heaviest here, roughly double a 420D cover and three times a 210D one. By published waterproof rating, the highest figures are 25,000 Pa and 10000 MM, both on mid-price covers. By construction, the premium covers win on things the numbers do not capture: taped seams, cotton or metallic heat shields, soft windshield liners, vent systems and lifetime warranties. Strongest fabric and best cover are not the same question.
What is the difference between an indoor and an outdoor motorcycle cover?
The coating. An indoor cover is soft breathable fabric with no waterproof coating, made for dust and garage grit, and it will never trap condensation. An outdoor cover is the same fabric plus a polyurethane coating and taped seams, which stops rain but also stops it breathing, which is why every good outdoor cover has vents. Indoor/outdoor generally means an outdoor cover the maker is happy to sell as both, not a third type of fabric. An honest indoor cover will say NOT WATERPROOF on the listing.
What size motorcycle cover do I need for a Harley Touring bike?
Measure from the front tyre to the furthest point at the back, which on a Touring bike is usually the tour pack or the rack behind it, and buy longer than that. As a guide: 96 inches for a Sportster or bare Softail, 104 for a Softail with a screen and bags, 108 for a Street Glide, Road Glide or Road King, 110 with a tour pack and a widened rear cut, and 116 for a full dresser with a rack. A trike needs a trike-specific cut, not a longer cover. When in doubt go one size up, because owners of the premium brands consistently report their size charts run tight.
Do motorcycle covers scratch paint?
Movement scratches paint, not the lining. A cover that flaps in the wind drags fabric and whatever grit is under it across the clearcoat all night. One owner who fixed it: adding a third centre strap "keeps the flapping down which has really hurt the paint in the past". So the answer is three tie-down points and never covering a dirty bike. The one place a liner genuinely matters is the windshield, which is the sharpest high point on the bike and the first place cheap covers tear through.
Will a cover make my bike rust underneath?
It can, if the cover is unvented or you cover a wet bike. Warm damp air under a sealed cover condenses on cold metal overnight and has nowhere to go. Every decent outdoor cover has vents for exactly this reason, and owners of vented covers report only occasional moisture rather than a problem. Three rules: cover a dry bike, use a vented cover, and put a sheet or a board under the bike if the ground is damp. For a whole winter, rechargeable silica gel bags on the floor either side of the front wheel are a cheap insurance policy.
Does a motorcycle cover prevent theft?
It helps by hiding what the bike is, so a passing opportunist cannot see whether it is worth stealing. But the cover itself gets stolen, which owners report, and the lock grommets on most covers are a single hole at the front. A 7 ft vinyl-coated steel cable and padlock for about $11 through the front grommet and around the wheel stops the cover walking off and also stops it blowing off. Be clear that this protects the cover. Protecting the motorcycle is a disc lock and a chain, and a different purchase.
How long does a motorcycle cover last?
Outdoors in real sun, two to four years. A $109 premium cover ran four seasons of continuous outdoor use before an owner called it finished. A $30 cover was titled "Good but lasts only 2 years" by a satisfied buyer. Owners in the southern states re-buy more often and say so. The first things to fail are the fabric over the windshield edge, the heat-sealed seam tape peeling, and the elastic hem losing its tension. Treat a cover as a consumable and it stops being disappointing.
Before you buy

The short version

  1. Let the pipes cool. Ten minutes with a heat panel, fifteen to twenty without. Only three of these 22 covers have one.
  2. Measure the bike to the back of the tour pack and buy one size up from that.
  3. Three tie-down points, not one. If your cover has one strap, add gust straps rather than replacing it.
  4. Buy the cut, not just the length. Side Box and Side+Top Box are different covers.
  5. Read the Amazon spec field, not the marketing. One of the most expensive covers says Water Resistant in its own specification.
  6. Cover a clean, dry, cooled bike and put something under it on wet ground.
  7. Cable-lock it. Eleven dollars, and it solves theft and wind at the same time.
  8. Replace it every two to four years. It is a consumable, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with a torn cover over a faded seat.
